Samen met zijn twee broers, Meyer geboren in 1903 en Matthijs geboren in 1906, groeide hij op in de Amsterdamse binnenstad. Zijn vader had daar in de jaren dertig een winkel in brood- en banketbakkerij-artikelen en -gereedschappen aan de Kromboomsloot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jozeph trouwde in december 1938 in Amsterdam met Hilde Emilie Bachrach, geboren in Marburg (Duitsland) op 21 februari 1914, dochter van Adolf Bachrach (1880-1928) en Cilly Carlebach (1887-1942). Hilde bracht haar jeugd in Marburg door en bezocht daar de lokale Elisabethschule. Het huwelijk werd op 26 maart 1939 om 13.00 uur ingezegend in het Park Hotel aan de Hobbemastraat. Als dank voor alle blijken van belangstelling plaatsten zij op 7 april een advertentie in het Nieuw Isra\u00eblitisch Weekblad. Als woonadres wordt daarin Deurloostraat 41 huis genoemd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waarom Jozeph in de winter van 1941 naar Goes verhuisde, is onduidelijk. De Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant van 20 februari 1941 meldt als \u2018ingekomen van Amsterdam\u2019 J. Stibbe, koopman in bakkerijmachines, Lange Kerkstraat 19 in Goes. Daar zou hij van 28 januari 1941 tot 25 maart 1942 verblijven, terwijl zijn echtgenote Hilde achterbleef in de Deurloostraat in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samen met de andere Joodse inwoners werd hij in maart 1942 gedwongen de provincie Zeeland te verlaten en naar Amsterdam te verhuizen. Daar lijkt hij weer bij zijn echtgenote te zijn ingetrokken. Samen met Hilde Bachrach kwam hij op 20 juni 1943 in Westerbork aan.
