In eerste instantie werkte hij bij zijn vader in de zaak, in 1937 nam hij de leiding over het bedrijf met winkels in de Sint Domusstraat en de Maarstraat van hem over. Wilkens (Bram), een zoon van Izaak\u2019s broer Herman, vertelde hier tijdens een interview het volgende over:<br \/><em>Dit is eigenlijk een wonder. Want wat is er gebeurd. Dat verhaal van het Avontuur van Kobus Knabbel is van m\u2019n nichtje Bertha, die met haar vader(Izaak) en moeder (Estella) in Amsterdam was \u2013 ze hebben zichzelf<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_972\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-972\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-972 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ettyhillesumhuis.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Afb.11-300x66.jpg\" alt=\"De Avonturen van Kobus Knabbel, een jeugdboek uit 1941\/1942. Wilkens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>aangegeven omdat ze dachten dat ze naar een werkkamp in Polen gingen; ze hebben nog afscheid genomen, ik kan het nog helemaal voor me halen, ze was net zo oud als ik \u2013 dat verhaal van Kobus Knabbel, een soort sprookje, dat heeft zo\u2019n 70 jaar op een opslagzolder van het Leger des Heils gelegen. Er staat iets achterop geschreven: ter nagedachtenis aan Bertha Wilkens, adres zo en zo in Zierikzee, dat ze weggehaald zijn. Het is in Amsterdam gevonden, het is misschien per ongeluk achtergebleven. Ergens terechtgekomen, ik weet niet waar en via via bij het Leger des Heils; toen ze daar een paar jaar geleden die zolder opruimden is er daar iemand zo clever geweest, die het opgestuurd heeft naar het gemeentearchief van Zierikzee. \u2026<\/em><br \/><em>\u00a0<\/em><br \/>In Amsterdam besloten Ies en Stella zich vrijwillig aan te melden voor transport naar een werkkamp in Duitsland. Ook dit wist Bram Wilkens zich nog goed te herinneren:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ik zie ze nog voor ons staan aan de Churchill-laan. Ze zeiden, we gaan misschien een beter leven tegemoet als we naar Duitsland of Polen gaan. Zo hebben we afscheid genomen. Mijn moeder had nog warme dingen voor ze gemaakt, warme sloffen en handschoenen en zo. Mijn vader had ook nog wel het idee om ze op te volgen om ons ook aan te geven.
