Hij was voormalig commandant van &#8216;Judendurchgangslager&#8217; Westerbork. Zijn rechters hadden hem tien jaar opgelegd met aftrek van drie\u00ebnhalf jaar voorarrest, maar met de troonsbestijging van Juliana werd hem gratie verleend. Daardoor heeft Gemmeker uiteindelijk een opvallend lage straf uitgezeten en verdween deze omstreden man uit onze vaderlandse geschiedenis. Maar het verleden knaagde&#8230; Wie was die man die in ruim twee jaar tijd zorgde voor de effici\u00ebnte afvoer van zo&#8217;n honderdduizend Nederlandse Joden? Wekelijks vertrok onder zijn toeziend oog een trein volgeladen met onschuldige mensen richting de vernietigingskampen in Oost-Europa. Wat er in die kampen met de Joden gebeurde wist Gemmeker niet, zo verklaarde hij tijdens zijn proces. Dat vraagt om een antwoord.
