What is the Etty Hillesum Research Centre?

On 13 June 2006, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Klaas A.D. Smelik, the Etty Hillesum Research Centre (EHOC) was established at Ghent University as part of the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Near East and North Africa. On 1 October 2015, the new Etty Hillesum Research Centre in Middelburg was opened by former mayor Harald Bergmann. On 1 October 2019, historian Dr Lotte Bergen became director of the EHOC.
